What to Bring
Kayaking and Paddleboarding
- 2 to 3 bottles of water per person as staying hydrated is critical to having a great time out on the water.
- Wear clothes or a bathing suit that can get wet – synthetic material is best, no cotton or jeans.
- Please wear water shoes, sandals or tennis shoes that can get wet.
- If you are paddleboarding, you are required to wear shoes with straps that will not fall off. These shoes will get wet.
- Bring sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses with a retaining strap.
- If relevant, bring an extra pair of contact lenses and required medications.
- Don’t forget to capture your adventure with cameras, GoPro, and cell phones. We provide dry bags for you to use.
- We will go out rain or shine – please bring rain gear as afternoon rain is common in the Lowcountry.
- In the spring and fall, a light jacket is recommended.
Dolphin Eco-Tours

- Wear shoes that you do not mind getting sandy as you will be able to walk on the beach.
- A bag to carry shells and beach finds.
- If relevant, bring an extra pair of contact lenses and required medications.
- Don’t forget to capture your adventure with cameras, GoPro, and cell phones.
- We will go out rain or shine – please bring rain gear as summer showers are common in the Lowcountry.

Fossil Hunting Tour
- 4 to 5 bottles of water per person as staying hydrated is critical to having a great time out on the water.
- Bring sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses with a retaining strap as shade is not guaranteed on the boat or on Morris Island.
- Wear comfortable shoes that you do not mind getting sandy as you will be walking on the beach.
- A book bag or similar to carry personal belongings on the hike such as drinks & snacks.
- A ziplock bag for fossils, shells and other beach finds is also recommended.
- If relevant, bring an extra pair of contact lenses and required medications.
- If you are bringing small children, we encourage you to bring a beach stroller as the beach hike is multiple miles.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time of day to see wildlife?
You are able to see wildlife at all times throughout the day. No time is better than others.
What is the weather policy?
We go out rain or shine however we will postpone or cancel a trip if the conditions are unsafe – such as lightning or very high wind. Read more detailed information below.
Is there transportation available?
We do not provide transportation to our location. Rental cars and UBER are the best ways to reach us. We recommend scheduling your drop off and pickup ahead of time.
When is the best time of day to see dolphins?
The dolphins are residents of the Charleston area and can be seen 24/7, 365 days a year. However, you are more likely to see the strand feeding behavior during low tide.
You have a 99% chance of seeing dolphins on our Dolphin Eco Charter and the Morris Island Lighthouse tour which are on our Carolina Skiff bay boat. Although you may see dolphins on our other tours, these two tours have the greatest chances.
Do you need experience to participate?
No experience is needed. We take out first-timers all the time! We provide a very detailed instruction before you go paddleboarding and kayaking to ensure that you feel comfortable and have the best time possible on the water.
Can trips be customized?
Yes. We recommend booking a private tour so that we can accommodate your needs and requests. Call our office to discuss private options and pricing.
Do you need to know how to swim?
No, you do not. You are required by law to wear a personal floatation device when you go kayaking or paddleboarding with us. We also have personal flotation devices on all of our boats.
Do you offer group trips?
Yes, COA welcomes groups large and small. Group discounts may be available. Please call our office to set up your group trip today.
Where do you launch kayaks and paddleboards you have for rent?
We have a private launch that is at our location, 1871 Bowens Island Road. Our staff will prepare and pull down your gear to the water’s edge.
Can I bring food or drinks on the tours?
Yes, as long as you do not litter. We ask that you do not bring anything in single use glass bottles.
Can you go inside the Morris Island Lighthouse?
No. The historic lighthouse is surrounded by water and is not accessible to the public.
Can I sign the waiver without printing it?
Yes. The waiver is electronic and you can sign it on your phone or computer. No need to print.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes. They are available in any denomination and can be customized with a personal message. You can buy them online or over the phone.
Do you allow dogs?
New pet policy as of June 1, 2022. With the exception of service dogs, COA does not allow dogs (or any pets) on guided group tours. Dogs are only allowed on kayak rentals or with approval on private tours. Please let us know if you will be bringing a service dog. This is in consideration of the pets themselves & all our other guests.
Dogs are not allowed on the Fossil Hunting Tour, Morris Island Lighthouse Tour, Dolphin Eco Charter, SUP rentals, guided kayak tours, or fishing charters.
Cancellation Policy
Due to the unique nature and small size of our groups, we are forced to remain firm about our cancellation policy. Consider that on the day of the excursion we will be there, on-site, waiting and ready to serve you. Regardless of the cancellation reason, our time and fixed cost are already invested. We may have turned down other customers by holding your space.
Cancellations made 24 hours (1 day) prior to the scheduled tour date & time will receive a full refund. Cancellations made within the 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure date & time are non-refundable.
No-shows and late arrivals (checking in the office after the tour is scheduled to begin) are non-refundable and will be charged in full if not already prepaid. Same day cancellations are considered a no-show and are non-refundable without any exceptions. Same day reschedules are subject to a 25% upcharge.
We reserve the right to cancel a public tour if a minimum number of reservations are not received. Customers will be given a full refund in case of operator cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Please note any large parties, private tours or groups with discounts are subject to a 48 hour cancellation policy. Check your confirmation email for cancellation policy information.
All marine activities are subject to water conditions. We do our best to contact groups 24-48 hours in advance if we have serious concerns about weather conditions.
Tours operate rain or shine as long as conditions are safe. Remember you have the option to cancel or reschedule outside of 24 hours with no penalty. If you don’t hear from us in advance, please dress for the weather and arrive on time. Typically, weather decisions are made at the time of departure and will be announced/discussed at check in. We provide ponchos free of charge if there is a likelihood of rain.
If we cancel a tour due to unsafe weather conditions, you will not be charged (or will receive a full refund if prepaid). You will have the option to reschedule for the next available space. Our staff will make the final decision as to weather conditions. Remember, a few passing rain showers are normal in our area & the general rain forecast applies more to areas over land. We monitor weather reports & the radar constantly. Folly Beach’s weather can differ greatly from the weather wherever you are located. Please don’t make the mistake of deciding not to come if it’s raining where you are, as you will be charged if the trip goes out. If you have any questions about the weather conditions, please call us to be sure and we will be more than happy to assist you and go over specific details.
Captains, guides & office staff are within their rights to deny service to guests who arrive inebriated, hungover or who are not in a condition, or unwilling, to understand and/or comply with safety instructions. Passengers that don’t meet the proper requirements will not be allowed to participate and the money will be non-refundable.
